“This is one of the most valuable books on public policy - not merely on environmental policy - to have been written for the intelligent general reader in the past ten years. The Skeptical Environmentalist is a triumph.” The Economist”...a superbly documented and readable book.” Wall Street Journal”...it is a surprise to meet someone who calls himself an environmentalist but who asserts that things are getting better….Strange to say, the author of this happy thesis is not a steely-eyed economist at a conservative Washington think tank but a vegetarian, backpack-toting academic who was a member of Greenpeace for four years…
The facts and nothing but the facts.
This book is simply a must read. I have more notes and folded corners in this book than any other book in my collection. The surprise chapter in this book is #2 which handles the world of pessimism and explains how this common demonimator of humanatiy permeates many/most things adversely - important stuff. Skeptical covers the commodities;life, food, water and air ,and all things between. Global warming was a particularly intriguing topic. The beginnings of the political movement are explained, the facts are doled out and the reader is left with a jaw dropping ‘whats up’ with the media bias and political correctness running the world into the ground whilst simultaneuously claiming to do the opposite. This book is as much a reference guide as it is good read, and it tears apart every letter of Lester Browns book - State of the World - apart.
This book is a top 5 read…...
The Closing of the American Mind (Paperback)
When The Closing of The American Mind was published in 1987, it instantly ignited a firestorm of praise and condemnation. Conservatives hailed it as vindication of their long-ignored criticisms about American culture in general and higher education in particular. Liberals denounced it as elitist and intolerant, and they said Bloom wanted to keep students ignorant of other cultures so he could indoctrinate them with his. Neither side had it right. The Closing of The American Mind is, as Bloom put it in his preface, “a meditation on the state of our souls.”
I found this book to be a very powerful. It came early in my political readings and made a noteworthy impression. I would definitely recommend this book and it should be in your top 5.
Some interesting observations: First, the purpose of this book appears to be education related, but the topics permeate almost all facets of life and end up dead center in the domain of politics. It becomes very clear that education, government and politics are very much enterwined. Next, the first few chapters are very complicated and time consuming. There are paragraphs that are so articulate and compact that they equal entire chapters in lesser books, entire books in the case of Al Franken. Every word is worthy of careful reflection and thought. The first few chapters are not easy and you will cut your teeth. The balance of the book is to the point and pleasant to read. This book is not a book that attempts to support or further conservatism so much, nor diminish liberalism so much, although most do find that it favors conservatism. I ended up moving politicaly to the right with this book because it explained liberalism in terms that I could understand, and I didn’t like what I read. There were things I never knew about conservatism that simply amazed me. Must read.

The World’s Banker : A Story of Failed States, Financial Crises, and the Wealth and Poverty of Nations
This is a good companion read to anyone that has a hankering for all things Money Master. I am not a fan of the IMF or the WB in general and found it difficult to handle the sugar coating this book offers. Don’t get me wrong, the information and history is valuable, and James Wolfensohn is fascinating in his own way. There is subtle bias in this book that seems to present the notion that the underlying problems of the world bank are unfortunate, for the world and the bank - I think that the world bank is unfortunate to begin with. I tend to think that there are real problems in the world and the world bank is part of the real problems in the world. There are numerous groups that protest the world bank too, and I don’t align with them either - this is a real tough topic. The book is good for what it is, helps understand what and how the bank works, what it is has done and attempts to do.

By tracing Obama’s career and influences from his early years in Hawaii and Indonesia, the beginnings of his political career in Chicago, his voting record in the Illinois legislature, his religious training and his adoption of Christianity through to his recent involvement in Kenyan politics, his political advisors and fundraising associates and his meteoric campaign for president, Jerome Corsi shows that an Obama presidency would, in his words, be “a repeat of the failed extremist politics that have characterized and plagued Democratic Party politics since the late 1960s.

Many Americans are waking up to the dangerous agenda of the ACLU. The ACLUvs. America will clue readers in to the culture wars afoot and will equip them to become effective agents for liberty and freedom against the ACLU’s onslaught.
The ACLU is this nagging little thing that pops up once in awhile, Usually it just shows up as little comment from a right winged conservative pundit, but nobody ever really attacks the organization for what it is….. Anti American. If your gut response to this comment is negative, you need to read this book. The founder of the ACLU is an admitted communist/Marxist/Socialist who intends to disrupt, end if possible, western capitalism. Its that simple. Most people roll along and casually have no clue what this group is up to.

In this book, discover the 28 Principles of Freedom our Founding Fathers said must be understood and perpetuated by every people who desire peace, prosperity, and freedom. Learn how adherence to these beliefs during the past 200 years has brought about more progress than was made in the previous 5000 years.
As with the 10 Big Lies by Michael Medved, anyone who thinks they should be a progressive liberal should read this book - assuming they have a lick of freedom and liberty left in them. It is amazing just how powerful the ideas of the founding fathers are. You read about all sorts of great economic and political thinkers and there philosophies, like Marz and Keynes, and capitalism and communism, but how much do you know about the American Constitution and the Founding Fathers? I submit that the single element missing form the liberal thinkers repretroire of knowledge is a simple understanding of America’s founding. Lord knows it isn’t being taught in our schools anymore - something you might have noticed if you read The Closing of the American Mind by Allan Bloom. Glenn Beck recommended this book recently and the 1981 book has seen an unprecendented revival. Its ok to read about America, believe in America and this book brings it on and gives the best the rest of the world has to offer a run for its money.

In this bold and brilliantly argued book, acclaimed author and talk-radio host Michael Medved zeroes in on ten of the biggest fallacies that millions of Americans believe about our country—in spite of incontrovertible facts to the contrary. In The 10 Big Lies About America, Medved pinpoints the most pernicious pieces of America-bashing disinformation that pollute current debates about the economy, race, religion in politics, the Iraq war, and other contentious issues.
This should be a top 10 read - every pessimistic American (i.e., liberal) needs this info.
A person could read the Amazon.com Book description and get the pertinent message this book offers - there are distructive distortations that prevail in the main stream market place of ideas that simply should be eliminated. It good to know the questions and answers, but I take the book one step farther - who perpetuates the distortions? I would liken this book to the Skeptical Environmentalist - where Skeptical tackles huge worldwide issues, Lies takes on the riff raff that attempts to spoil America. The only complaint I have is that Michael Medved tends to take the high road too often and is reluctant to get aggressive with his viewpoints. I would eagerly settle for assertive. Sometimes he comes across as apologetic. I purchased an early autographed copy because I think Michael Medved deserves the patronage.

In the face of the modern liberal assault on Constitution-based values, an attack that has steadily snowballed since President Roosevelt’s New Deal of the 1930s and resulted in a federal government that is a massive, unaccountable conglomerate, the time for re-enforcing the intellectual and practical case for conservatism is now. Conservative beliefs in individual freedoms do in the end stand for liberty for all Americans, while liberal dictates lead to the breakdown of civilized society—in short, tyranny.

Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning (Hardcover)
This book is scary.
The liberal media and social pundits will gladly attempt to pin the label of fascism on conservatism but this book makes the arguement clearly against this. What you are left with is an astonishing and alarming understanding of todays liberalism. Modern Obama politics are carefully cloaked and disguised but the fascism is there. This book provides the history and links to reality that should scare you to death. In all fairness, liberalism holds at its heart a very noble cause, but unfortunately it has been hijacked and never been able to manifest itself in any meaningful positive way - and that would be the problem with liberalism… its a good idea in theory but in reality if fails and this books clearly points this out, and then some.

Can we have peace in the Holy Land? Is there a plan that will work? What if that plan included dividing Jerusalem and was embraced by our new president? What if that plan is seen as surrender and weakness, and emboldens radical Islam? If Jimmy Carter and his Liberal Left friends succeed by sacrificing America s strongest ally in the Middle East, Israel, to appease Arab rage, it will, in fact, make Jerusalem the center of gravity of the war on terror while unifying radical Islam. The results will be catastrophic for the United States, for Israel and for the world
He ran against an unpopular war and President in the name of change, human rights and hope…
Sound familiar? There are countless mainstream talking heads (conservatives for sure) that have coined Carter as an absolutely lame and dispicable President .. guilty of spurring major atrocities! Yet the liberal left elevate him to god status. This is a current book that ties together the policies of Carter and Obama.
Guilty: Liberal “Victims” and Their Assault on America (Hardcover)
by Ann Coulter (Author)
Ann isn’t for the faint of heart - and these are the folks that really need to read this.
If you don’t agree with Ann Coulter you WILL hate this book because she has a very quick wit and harsh tongue. She does not mince words except to exemplify her sarcasm. If you want to get riled up read this book. If you want to explore the double standards and political correct craziness being pumped up your arse by the liberal media this book is for you. Don’t be fooled, the book is packed with facts and exact accounts of what was and what is and that is why her sharp wit stands strong, ramblings and pontifications are noticeably missing. This book is one continuous non stop romp that attacks political liberalism on its own terms, all is fair is love and war. Guilty is right, Coulter knows she is right, you know she is right, and the non believing ‘left’ overs remain where they belong, in their sand boxes.

The environmental movement has cultivated a warm and fuzzy public image, but behind the smiley-face rhetoric of “sustainability” and “conservation” lies a dark agenda. The Greens aim to regulate your behavior, downsize your lifestyle, and invade the most intimate aspects of your personal life.
In this stunning exposé, Steve Milloy unveils the authoritarian impulse underlying the Green crusade. Whether they’re demanding that you turn down your thermostat, stop driving your car, or engage in some other senseless act of self-denial, the Greens are envisioning a grim future for you marked by endless privation.

I suspect that this book will tie in well with the Skeptical Environmentalist. I also suspect that folks that view this book as politically incorrect and unappealing have never read the Skeptical Environmentalist.

Fleeced: How Barack Obama, Media Mockery of Terrorist Threats, Liberals Who Want to Kill Talk Radio, the Do-Nothing Congress, Companies That Help Iran, and Washington Lobbyists for Foreign Governments Are Scamming Us ... and What to Do About It

In this appraisal of America’s woes, conservative TV and talk-radio host Beck (The Real America) lays lighthearted siege to everything that makes the world worse. [P]olitical correctness is the biggest threat this nation faces today, he declares, as it makes us prey for Islamic fundamentalists, renders taboo the roots of our economic troubles (poor people are, in fact, lazy, he argues) and creates rampant distortion in the media. Beck goes paragraph for paragraph with global-warming alarmist Al Gore, merrily slaughtering the sacred cows of the environmentalist crowd.
