Obama first 100 days
Dick Cheney is often critical of President Obama, but on one issue we suspect the former Vice President has a grudging admiration: In a mere 100 days, the Democrat has silenced eight years of criticism about the Imperial Presidency. It is once again the liberal hour in American politics, and the media
ACLU Jeopardizing U.S. interests
Is embarrassing the military and the Bush Administration worth jeopardizing U.S. interests, or perhaps even the lives of American soldiers?
We ask because we are being taken to task by the American Civil Liberties Union for opposing the Obama Administration’s decision to release photographs collected as part of a military probe into prisoner abuse. In a letter published nearby, ACLU lawyers Jameel Jaffer and Amrit Singh write that our objections to the release are “disturbing, particularly because [they come] from a news organization.” Apparently, their idea of “all the news that’s fit to print” is, well, anything.
Current Economic Crisis
The current economic crisis so far eclipses anything the American economy has undergone since the Great Depression that “recession” is too tepid a term to describe it. Its gravity is measured not by the unemployment rate but by the dizzying array of programs that the government is deploying and the staggering amounts of money that it is spending or pledging—almost $13 trillion in loans, other investments and guarantees—in an effort to avoid a repetition of the 1930s.
Fed Scales back bank stress tests
The Federal Reserve significantly scaled back the size of the capital hole facing some of the nation’s biggest banks shortly before concluding its stress tests, following two weeks of intense bargaining.
In addition, according to bank and government officials, the Fed used a different measurement of bank-capital levels than analysts and investors had been expecting, resulting in much smaller capital deficits.
Sucker Rally ? - DJIA April 2009
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has bounced an astounding 30% from its March 9 low of 6547. Is this the dawn of a new era? Are we off to the races again?
I’m not so sure. Only a fool predicts the stock market, so here I go. This sure smells to me like a sucker’s rally. That’s because there aren’t sustainable, fundamental reasons for the market’s continued rise. Here are three explanations for the short-term upswing:
The WHC Dinner and Crass Sykes
The White House Correspondents Dinner took place this weekend. As usual, the president was in attendance and a comedian provided the evening’s entertainment. As Toby Harnden of London’s Daily Telegraph reports, the comedian, Wanda Sykes, turned out to be a crass act:
A Jobless Recovery - Wall Street Journal
“President Obama’s chief economics forecaster said on Sunday that the country was not likely to see positive employment growth until 2010, even if the economy began to grow later this year,” the New York Times reports:
Speaking on C-SPAN, Christina Romer, chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said
By GURCHARAN DAS From today’s Wall Street Journal Asia
The most damaging fallout from this economic crisis may well be a loss of trust in the democratic capitalist system, especially if those who are unemployed and suffering begin to believe that “anything goes” in an unfair world. In the rush to rewrite the rules

Revisiting Reaganism
According to the out-spoken conservative pundit, Ann Coulter, left-wing, secular-progressive liberals have been on the wrong side of every foreign policy issue from the Cold War fight against communism right up through today’s War on Terror today … and you know what?
